Rock Art and Ruins for Beginners and Old Guys
Published in Paperback by Rainbow Publishing (09 April, 2001)
Authors: Albert B., Jr. Scholl and Albert B. Scholl Jr.
Average review score:

Fantastic
With a sence of humor Mr. Scholl does a great job of educating others about rock art.

In an introduction chapter he discusses what rock art is and types of rock art. He discusses what rock art means and refers you to other well written books. He also provides lists of emergency equipment, camping equipment and more that you should consider taking as you begin looking at rock art.

In the next chapters he tells where to go to see rock art. He also instructs the reader about the expected behavior, tours to take, and more.

There are directions for taking pictures of rock art and explanations of clothes to wear, weather, and even a few recipes for crockpot cooking... so you can cook while you are looking and come home to a nice meal. Great!

This is a very exciting book. It made me want to jump out of my seat and go looking. The pictures are nice. His enthusiasm is catching and the format is easy to understand. Well worth the money.

Enjoy

Rock Solid Golf: A Foundation for a Lifetime
Published in Hardcover by Walkabout Press (15 November, 2002)
Authors: Dana Rader and Scott Martin
Average review score:

Help Has Arrived
This is an easy to read complete review of what you need to know to play golf well. After reading the book I made some adjustments to my grip, stance and swing plane and, combined with some minor arm strengthening exercises, I have increased the distance I hit each club in my bag by at least 10 yards. Every serious golfer should read this book. Ted Turner.

Rock Solid Golf
This book is a golfers dream. A simple instructional book that covers all aspects of the game. The only book I have found that writes out a practice program for you and tells you how to find a teacher as well. Great read and well written.

Simple but powerful
Golf is sometimes so complicated that it's not worth all the expense and frustration, and other times so simple it's beautiful. Reading this book, I felt the feeling you get when working with a great teacher who simplifies (vs. complicates) the sport. There are some sections in this book that you don't find in others (fitness, how to find a teacher, and loads of quotes from great players) but the biggest help to me was the reveiw of the fundamentals. In the book, Rader wrote something about posture that I was off on - a quick fix (for me, it was bending at the hips) and I'm hitting it better than in the last five years. Go figure - 25 bucks to fix something my club pro would've charged 125 for...per session.

Rock-A-Bye Farm
Published in Paperback by Aladdin Library (March, 1994)
Authors: Diane Johnston Hamm and Rick Brown

IMy daughter has loved hearing this book for years
Rock a Bye Farm has been a favorite in my house and I would highly suggest this book to any one that enjoys reading with their children.

Want a peaceful, fun and comforting book for your youngster?
Well, this is it. Our copy of this book is so well loved that I must find another copy! Bring it back as a board book also!

The fun illustrations and simple text (which we sing to the tune of Hi Ho the derrio) are both stimulating and soothing for my 14 month old. As soon as the book is open she is pointing and rocking! This is right on par with Good Night Moon.

Easy book for children to follow
My daughter likes when we read Rock-a-bye Farm. I will start to read a page and she will finish by telling me who the farmer is rocking to sleep. She loves to see the end when everyone is asleep and the stars are shining. It is too bad this is out of print.

The Beatles As Musicians: The Quarry Men Through Rubber Soul
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (October, 2001)
Author: Walter Everett
Average review score:

Dense, but wonderful.
Yes, this book is very dense and technical, I am not a musician and was a bit lost at times, however, the author structures the book in such a way that you can skim or skip what is over your head (a lot for me) and still get something out of this book.

For me, one of the most important and rare things about this book is the way the author does not fall into the John vs. Paul biases like so many others who have written on this topic. He gives both men the written ananlysis and technical break down of their work they deserve and does not short change Paul in favor of John. This is appreciated as I believe it gives the best description of how the songwriting evolved through the talents of both men.

He also gives the same critical analysis of George Harrison's songs, this is rare indeed.

For these reasons I highly recommend the book for serious Beatle fans.

I am already burning through the second book.

Excellent Beatle book but...
First, let me make it clear that I really like this book (and its companion volume.) It's pretty difficult to write anything about the Beatles anymore that hasn't been written about ad nauseum already, but both of these books contain a great deal of fresh and intelligent information and insight on the Beatles's music. That said, I have a feeling that a lot of folks looking for new Beatles literature just aren't going to particularly enjoy The Beatles As Musicians. I'm a musician, but at times as I was reading this material I felt as though I might as well have been reading Latin simply because Mr. Everett is often very technical and rather esoteric in his discussions. In some ways (and Mr. Everett admittedly touches on this issue) these books seem somehow to fly in the face of what makes rock music so great in the first place...emotion, borderline chaos, an underlying sense of danger and rebellion, limited musicianship that somehow leads to innovation, chance, improvisation, etc etc. Still, as I noted, I enjoyed these books a great deal even when I didn't have the slightest idea what the author was writing about. But if you're not a musician or you are one who is largely self-taught and as technically stupid as I am, I wonder how much you'll like The Beatles As Musicians. Regardless, in appreciation of the freshness and intelligence of his work, I have to give Mr. Everett's books both five stars.

Worth Every Penny
I like the way this author compliments his readers' intelligence by writing about musical theory with clear detail. He describes how the Beatles achieved some of the sounds they did and gives good, in-depth analyses of many of their songs.

This book is truly a must-have for inveterate Beatles fans; musicians and lay people as well will certainly come away enriched after having read this. I can't recommend this one highly enough.

Blood Rock
Published in Paperback by Signet (06 March, 2001)
Author: Ralph W. Cotton
Average review score:

Blood Rock
Ralph Cotton has gotten back to his writing roots! In the tradition of "While Angels Dance," Blood Rock is packed full of great dialogue. The interchange between the outlaws at times had me laughing out loud.

If you liked Ralph's earlier books, you will LOVE Blood Rock!

ANOTHER GOOD COTTON BOOK!
Blood Rock is another good western by Ralph Cotton. It is the story of how Ranger Sam Burrack got started. He is a buffalo hunter that knows nothing about law enforcement. Before the book is over he has learned so much and become a force of his own. Has a lot of action and you can feel and see the western country side through Cottons eyes. For a fast paced, fast moving book with lots ot action this will be hard to beat.

A REALLY GOOD BOOK (and i know when i read a good book)
This book is soooo good. Ralph Cotton really captures real life events that would have happened in the Wild West times. I'm a western book fanatic and this book was soo good. You have to get it. If you want to know what life was like for a Arizona ranger, here's your chance.

Raslo Layton : Rock Poet
Published in Paperback by Nosehair Productions (October, 2000)
Author: Raslo Layton

Bonkers
After reading this stuff, words are meaningless. What can I say? Awsome, what insight. Clearly a twisted tale from a troubled mind. Read it with someone you love.

Rock Poet Extraordinaire
Simply brilliant. It's not often you come across a writer who, with only a few words, can stop you dead in your tracks, take your breath away and give you something to think about for the rest of the day....well, here's one.

Raslo's first collection can make you laugh and cry, but above all else his words make you think. If you've been through life's ups and downs, you'll find these poems really resonate. Do yourself a favour and buy this book - do your friends a favour and give them a copy. Everyone who reads this will have a favourite, mine is The second time I met Donn Deedon.

Thank you, Raslo, for sharing your soul with us, for this is where your writings are from - and let's hope you continue to do so, we are enriched by the experience.

Power Lurking Beneath the Surface and Slamming Onshore
This was a very moving read for me...it brings a lot of the author's emotions raging to the surface. Although there is a lot of anger here that seems to want to find a suitable (or even not so suitable) release, there are times when a more subtle and lonely world view becomes visible such as in the piece "How many women played my drum." Even within this piece, however, the anger rages in the background.

I look forward to seeing more of this fine poet's work.

Rock Roll and Reminisce

Rock Roll and Reminisce
Joe Andrews does a tremendous job sharing his passion and knowledge of the history of rock 'n roll. This is a comprehensive book of facts, trivia, lists and a narrative of all who have contributed to this phenomenon. It brings back memories of songs and artists for people who grew up during this era, as well as serving as a great resource for people who wish to learn more about the music.

I remember when rock was young...
This is a great compilation of work from a man who knows his music! If you're into Rock & Roll, then this book is for you. It's got birthdates of the stars, music hits, Billboard's tops and categories of everything under the sun in the world of Rock and Roll. If you thought you knew trivia, then take a gander at some of these questions. They range from "Oh I knew that!" to "Wow! That's great to know!" I'm a trivia buff, and I found this book to be a great addition to my collection of trivia volumes. It's a must-have if you're at all into the great era of music gone by. It's even featured at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum. Take the time to order this one today!

Rock Roll and Reminisce
Hats off to Mr. Andrews for this remarkably fun and interesting book on rock and roll. It has certainly enlivened our music group at Lowell Adult Day Rehab.(LADR). Our memories have been enjoyably jogged as we hummed and sang aloud the tunes and lyrics , while trying to unravel the answers to the Trivia questions. There were even moments of hysterical laughter. This would be an excellent party book, as well as a great gift for music loving friends and family. At LADR, we have also created a group project. From our personal favorite tapes and C.D.'s we are collecting and editing our own tape of The 365 Songs of the Century. Thank you for this wonderful addition to our music group.

Excellent
A collection of intelligent and informed essays from the late, lamented magazine. Not necessarily for the casual fan, but rabid BB admirers will find tasty food for thought in these pages.

Over forty articles, essays & reviews with critical analysis

Great Read!
Don Cunningham and Jeff Bleiel have assembled some of the best Beach Boys writings here in this book, "Add Some Music To Your Day." I wasn't around to read these the first time in the "Add Some..." fanzine, but this is GREAT stuff. BRAVO!

The Complete Book of Doo-Wop
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (March, 2000)
Authors: Anthony J.] Gribin, Matthew M., Md. Schiff, and Andrew M. Schiff
Average review score:

The Doo Wop Bible
Get it. Very well done book. It just about have anythimg you want to know except for the kitchen sink, but who cares for the kitchen sink this is Doo Wop.

A comprehensive book everyone who likes doo wop should have
In recent years, due primarily to the PBS series on Doo Wop, this musical genre is being rediscovered. Finally, there is a comprehensive book on the who's, why's and what's of the definitive music of the 50's and early 60's.

Although this book sometimes over-emphasizes the specific sounds of the music (shoop de doop etc.) and spends too much time on certain groups, it is a great (and relatively inexpensive) resource for song titles. I especially liked the chapter on song styles from different parts of the country.

If it has a weakness, it isn't as comprehensive a guide on specific groups as is Jay Warner's book on singing groups. Still, all in all it is an excellent resource guide and a book any Doo Wop afficianado should have in a collection.

Very Informative
nowadays it's hard to get folks to sing on key.but this book showcases many great Acts that had there stuff together&were the real deal.you get alot of insightful information that details the great stuff from the good stuff.a solid comprehensive book that is very detailed&on point all the way through.this is a very important form of Creativity that needs to be fully appreciated by many.it's the basic for Harmony in any group that wants to be taken seriously as a vocal group.a must have great facts&insight.
